On July 31st John McCain said this about the cash for clunkers program:

“I not only wouldn’t vote for the extra two billion, I was opposed to the initial billion. “

McCain goes on to reason that the TARP money shouldn’t be used to subsidize automobiles. To McCain’s credit, he DID vote against the farm subsidy bill in 2002, so at least he is consistent with his position, albeit misguided (subsidies aren’t always bad)! McCain is an enigma. He supported the “bail outs” that Bush proposed, yet opposes any subsidies (proposed by anybody). The bail out was a subsidy for the financial market. Apparently being a maverick means contradicting yourself (or some might call it “flip flopping”).

Of course, since the UAW didn’t support him… why would he support them?

Anyway, back to today’s news: The Ford Focus is the second most popular car purchased in the clunkers program and Ford will increase production 21% this coming quarter.

What a failure, that Obumble!

Note: for the record I DO agree with McCain that there is too much corruption in our political system, with lobbyists and campaign contributions being the crux of the problem. I was even considering voting for McCain in 2000 before Karl Rove tricked primary voters into thinking McCain cheated on his wife and had an interracial baby (among other things).

What was that I was saying about how the cash for clunkers program was a good thing – and running out of money quickly was even better…?
