{"id":1389,"date":"2009-09-10T21:56:57","date_gmt":"2009-09-11T05:56:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=1389"},"modified":"2009-09-10T21:56:57","modified_gmt":"2009-09-11T05:56:57","slug":"art-walk-september-2009","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=1389","title":{"rendered":"Art Walk September 2009"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Finance class was cancelled Thursday, so I took the opportunity to join Sam downtown for the Art Walk.<\/p>\n<p>This art walk felt a little lackluster. \u00a0There was still a lot of street bands and DJ&#8217;s, street artists, etc, but not as many as we&#8217;ve seen in the past.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;upstairs&#8221; gallery had a lot of mediocre abstract art, but every time I go they seem to be expanding the space. \u00a0Way around the corner in a &#8220;back&#8221; room was a DJ. \u00a0I noticed the singer in the song, but I&#8217;d never heard the song before. \u00a0So I came home and researched it and discovered that Antony Hegarty is now doing vocals for some technodisco group called Hercules &amp; Love Affair. \u00a0The video below is the song that the DJ was playing, although it sounded much better loud and EQ tweaked so you could pick up on that bassline.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Fb8S51M2GAc&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"480\" height=\"385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Fb8S51M2GAc&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Phartika wasn&#8217;t as crowded as usual (but we were there early). \u00a0At the back were three medium sized paintings that I at first wrote off as photo collage, and then I realized that the photos were actually paintings&#8230; really good paintings. \u00a0Don&#8217;t know what is going on these Doro pieces, but the oil work is amazing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dorohofmann.com\/paintings.htm#\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Beliar Series: Falling Angels\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dorohofmann.com\/IMGS\/transparente.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"2\" height=\"2\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dorohofmann.com\/paintings.htm#\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dorohofmann.com\/IMGS\/hr\/Beliar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"563\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Phartika also had two pieces by John Scane. \u00a0I like this piece because of the subdued green and gray color scheme. \u00a0However, I think the foreground figure should be slightly more vibrant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/scaneart.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/scaneart.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/virtual-realism-series\/life-during-wartime_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"578\" height=\"720\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At one of the larger galleries was a makeshift barber shop. \u00a0There were barber shop paintings hung nearby and all the barbers were wearing shirts that said &#8220;BOLT&#8221;&#8230; I&#8217;m pretty sure they weren&#8217;t trying to sell crappy animated movies from last year &#8211; but I wasn&#8217;t sure what they were trying to sell\/do.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/Sqnil-DNlGI\/AAAAAAAAAvY\/cWGnOP0XlTY\/s800\/barbering.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The hive had some great paintings by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrystalchan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chrystal Chan<\/a>. \u00a0I wish I could use color like her. \u00a0She gets dangerously close to hackneyed Mark Ryden territory at times, but she gets a pass because her subject matter is often intelligent commentary on religion or the supernatural (unlike Rydenwhich is basically just&#8230;silly nonsense). \u00a0Also, nothing in any Ryden I&#8217;ve seen is as beautiful as the brush work on that green and brown riverbank in the painting below&#8230;check it out:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrystalchan.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignnone\" title=\"To Love To Live\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chrystalchan.com\/painting\/imagespainting\/tolovetolive.jpg\" alt=\"To Love To Live\" width=\"600\" height=\"417\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrystalchan.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"soul\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chrystalchan.com\/painting\/imagespainting\/soul.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chrystalchan.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chrystalchan.com\/painting\/imagespainting\/complete.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This next one wasn&#8217;t at the show, but I wish it was&#8230; because it&#8217;s awesome:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrystalchan.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chrystalchan.com\/painting\/imagespainting\/cantdoitalone.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"397\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back down on the main drag there was a really good prog\/funk\/jam band next to the Regent in the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/SqnimPjl0lI\/AAAAAAAAAvg\/u1HoGq7znYk\/s800\/artwalkband.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was also a person in a giant nose walking around. \u00a0What was that commercial with the giant noses?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/Sqnil5WU9mI\/AAAAAAAAAvc\/AnDPiD91Gdw\/s800\/giantnose.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>no, I don&#8217;t know those people.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the Regent were some &#8220;recent paintings by Vargas&#8221; (although I swear I saw some of those A LONG LONG time ago on the artwalk last year) and in the main hall, a lonely DJ on a lonely stage:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/Sqnill5ipzI\/AAAAAAAAAvU\/FJ9lD4i0i2Y\/s800\/regent.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>awwwwww&#8230;.wassamatta? \u00a0Nobody liked your idea to charge admission for the same shitty art and bands? \u00a0A year ago they had a decent thing going in this space&#8230;
