{"id":1680,"date":"2010-06-09T06:10:34","date_gmt":"2010-06-09T14:10:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=1680"},"modified":"2011-07-20T12:38:21","modified_gmt":"2011-07-20T20:38:21","slug":"1680","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=1680","title":{"rendered":"Portrait #1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some time around March, Sam let me know that she&#8217;d like me to paint her portrait for her birthday (in May).\u00a0 The first step was to pick the right photo.\u00a0 After a few photoshoots and hundreds of shots we chose this photo to work from:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TA_yQeqa9II\/AAAAAAAABgk\/pTYjVZqQ1pk\/s800\/sampainting1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The painting was to be done on cradled masonite, which I&#8217;d never painted on before.\u00a0 I started with a basic wash of where everything should go and then set out to create the &#8220;background.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TA_yPX6GqOI\/AAAAAAAABgY\/Ss4gV6FFcjQ\/s800\/sampainting2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"598\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Something is not quite right about the face in this wash &#8211; but I&#8217;ll work on that later.\u00a0 First I tried several times to figure out what the background would be.\u00a0 I first thought some kind of flowery amorphous fuzzy thing, in pink to match the dress she would be wearing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TA_yNHTldZI\/AAAAAAAABgQ\/xCEqCdkrom8\/s800\/sampainting3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"587\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Okay, maybe not.\u00a0 Although it looks &#8220;okay&#8221; up in the top left it just doesn&#8217;t seem to bring anything to the piece.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TA_yLIQXaMI\/AAAAAAAABgI\/Y3-HhvZlAlA\/s800\/sampainting4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"599\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I tried going orange.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t ask why &#8211; because I don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TA_yKuBFrrI\/AAAAAAAABgA\/-k13qmih8IM\/s800\/sampainting5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Frustrated with the background I decided to work on the actual body first and worry about the background later.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TA_yJ5ydpLI\/AAAAAAAABf4\/-iwRRmu_aE0\/s800\/sampainting6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"573\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking at the piece though &#8211; something doesn&#8217;t seem right about the face.\u00a0 I took tracing paper to the photo and laid it over the painting to make corrections:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TA_yJYeKYTI\/AAAAAAAABfw\/PX-ukwd49hQ\/s800\/sampainting7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TA_yF7vRBqI\/AAAAAAAABfo\/GtNLPOgZ3Jc\/s800\/sampainting8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TA_yA3QHzkI\/AAAAAAAABfg\/6E-eKcpp_Vg\/s800\/sampainting9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"592\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Still not an exact likeness &#8211; but better than before.\u00a0 I like hands, so I did a lot of work on the hand before eventually getting back to the background.\u00a0 I decided to put her on a park bench so we could see a more lively background.\u00a0 I thought this would work since she was resting her arm on the back of the chair.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TA_yARUZoDI\/AAAAAAAABfY\/AcvvOXNp9-8\/s800\/sampainting10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Painting wood is hard.\u00a0 I still haven&#8217;t figured out how to do it without looking &#8220;cartoony.&#8221;\u00a0 Next came some trees.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TA_x8l7WVEI\/AAAAAAAABfQ\/bo5lJOaDuqM\/s800\/sampainting11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"634\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I decided to make them cherry trees to bring in the pink accents again from what would eventually be her dress.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TA_x7x4zM6I\/AAAAAAAABfI\/U3NIw5bFcxc\/s800\/sampainting12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But how do you convincingly make millions of little flowers in the distance?\u00a0 Not easy &#8211; and I didn&#8217;t really accomplish it, but this is the extent of my skills at the present time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TA_x7emgTcI\/AAAAAAAABfA\/iuU2KeE4t1c\/s800\/sampainting13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"586\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And so from here I worked on the dress, the skin more and finally the hair &#8211; to end up here:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TA_x6zoY_BI\/AAAAAAAABe4\/RaZku3bn_nM\/s800\/sampainting14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"539\" height=\"674\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It looks <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\"> a little<\/span> very &#8220;cartoonish&#8221;
