genre much, but some time ago I drew this fairy creature with butterfly wings writhing around as if her hands were bound.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TCoxj7fHDQI\/AAAAAAAABms\/lXkb8_Xr-tQ\/s800\/IMG_1695.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"659\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From this I decided to make a painting sometime in early 2010.\u00a0 I asked Sam to pose as it was going to be difficult to &#8220;fake&#8221; the arch of the back and the placement of the other hand and clavicles, etc.\u00a0 She did it on one condition &#8211; that &#8220;certain areas&#8221; NOT be from her.\u00a0 So a few key details were changed, including the face.\u00a0\u00a0 Her modelling was mainly used for bone structure, perspective, etc.\u00a0\u00a0 Below is the raw umber first wash after doing a smaller sketch to combine the real elements with &#8220;fantasy&#8221; and transferring the drawing to canvas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TCox6wkB_6I\/AAAAAAAABm0\/T0MPM6KnEds\/s800\/butterflypaintingunder.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As usual I didn&#8217;t think about the background until the painting was underway (which I really have to stop doing).\u00a0 I started off with bedsheets fading into a purplish blackness.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TCox-4QMEeI\/AAAAAAAABoM\/xZQ9LzVNGwI\/s800\/IMG_1813.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TCox-uQ_mEI\/AAAAAAAABoE\/fPtsoA1mLmQ\/s800\/IMG_1817.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The bedsheets weren&#8217;t working &#8211; so I painted over them.\u00a0 Frustrated with the background I decided to start painting the flesh and come back to the background later.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TCox-XukHtI\/AAAAAAAABn8\/_MTqQhpT7dA\/s800\/IMG_1824.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"763\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Which of course included the face.\u00a0 Since I&#8217;d modified the face from the model&#8217;s a lot things started to get a little dicey.\u00a0 I spent a few days going back and forth from my drawing (which didn&#8217;t look bad in my opinion) to the canvas to see where it all went wrong.\u00a0 Eventually I would end up tracing the face again and nearly starting over completely.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TCox9xYXwRI\/AAAAAAAABn0\/TnP3T6e1gQw\/s800\/IMG_1828.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TCox9rkvupI\/AAAAAAAABns\/Or4IdUo53y8\/s800\/IMG_1834.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TCox9e8ky8I\/AAAAAAAABnk\/mdmwXkVbSl4\/s800\/IMG_1837.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TCox83P5GpI\/AAAAAAAABnc\/xRWn2KtMuQM\/s800\/IMG_1855.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Plus, remember, faces always look freaky without eyebrows!\u00a0 Those go on last.<\/p>\n<p>I worked more on the skin and started putting in some hair.\u00a0 Clearly brown, which I&#8217;d originally intended, was not going to gel with a dark red\/purple background.\u00a0 Something had to be done&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TCox8fJj37I\/AAAAAAAABnU\/iBZIOOrRogY\/s800\/IMG_1858.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So I changed the hair to some sort of electric blond color.\u00a0 Not quite realistic &#8211; but hey, this is sort of a &#8220;fantasy&#8221; genre painting anyway, right?\u00a0 Below is a larger look at the &#8220;studio&#8221; (before the May remodelling).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TCox7_F4soI\/AAAAAAAABnM\/tgAaRQ2NZ8I\/s800\/IMG_1865.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And below is the finished piece on my terrible old flimsy easel (I bought a new one after this piece was finished).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TCox7Yrr-hI\/AAAAAAAABnE\/O_FNb0HG7H4\/s800\/IMG_2563.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Below is my attempt to photograph and color correct the painting for the web.\u00a0 There is a luminance about the skin and the hair and wings that can&#8217;t really come through in a digital photograph.\u00a0 Also &#8211;
