{"id":1716,"date":"2010-07-09T06:14:08","date_gmt":"2010-07-09T14:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=1716"},"modified":"2010-07-09T10:11:26","modified_gmt":"2010-07-09T18:11:26","slug":"art-walk-july","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=1716","title":{"rendered":"Art Walk July"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like any other 2nd Thursday of the month, Sam and I met up for the Art Walk downtown.\u00a0 After walking through the new &#8220;Art Mart&#8221; at 501 5th ave. we met up with Garen.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;other&#8221; art market was open without an admission fee again and had food vendors.\u00a0 We decided to eat philly cheese steak &#8220;fries.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Basically the cheese-steak put over fries instead of in a bun (although sans green peppers for some reason).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZc7htH2I\/AAAAAAAABsU\/ovFNGcARgJM\/s800\/IMG_3460.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There wasn&#8217;t a lot of great art on this Art Walk except for The Hive and Temple of Visions (which has really stepped up their already good game &#8211; but more on that later&#8230;).<\/p>\n<p>We kept running into these guys.\u00a0 They were out pushing something for some organization.\u00a0 We were too scared to ask.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZcQ4pY_I\/AAAAAAAABsM\/WvgE1Okj7vE\/s800\/IMG_3464.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"382\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bang Gallery was one of the more popular galleries on the walk.\u00a0 Probably because of its singular focus on &#8220;pop-art.&#8221;\u00a0 A lot of galleries (and just random street corners as well) had DJs spinning and Bang was no different.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZcLoBtuI\/AAAAAAAABsE\/1NRuYYqJ2g0\/s800\/IMG_3468.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"396\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Note the Jarritos shirt on the portly DJ.\u00a0 Jarritos (a Latino soda-pop maker) set up shop at Bang and had young women passing out free drinks to everybody and a giant blow-up bottle outside on the street.\u00a0 This is nothing new for Jarritos though &#8211; they&#8217;ve passed out entire bottles to everyone on the street at\u00a0past Art Walks.\u00a0 They were demoing several new flavors this time though like grapefruit (which was okay) and tamarind (yuck!).<\/p>\n<p>The below shot is a practice shot for our fictitious album cover (photography credit=Sam).\u00a0 Note the graffiti (which covers all of Bang Gallery) showing Powdered Toast Man with Cookie Monster in a headlock in between Beetle-juice and Orko.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZb9MXZVI\/AAAAAAAABr8\/Pasz6g506-Q\/s800\/IMG_3472.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"454\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the next intersection we saw a homeless man carrying his own portrait.\u00a0 The artist was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vargaspresents.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Vargas<\/a>, who is always doing great charcoal portraits on the art walk.\u00a0 This time he signed his name as if the man was saying it.\u00a0 The homeless man, who obviously couldn&#8217;t read, was pointing at it, smiling and chanting &#8220;Arg!&#8221; like a pirate.\u00a0 Clever?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZbkkSw7I\/AAAAAAAABr0\/59PVg6XW7Ig\/s800\/IMG_3473-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"386\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As night fell the crowds grew larger and larger.\u00a0 Rumor has it that the 4square web site was trying to do a 250 person flash mob for the event.\u00a0 Most of the major corners were so packed that it was hard to tell when the crosswalk was active or not as too many people were just mulling about talking.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZdOb4WmI\/AAAAAAAABsc\/7uGkJVDlQLI\/s800\/IMG_3481.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"469\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles Performing Arts building (or something like that) had an anemic display of &#8220;latino art.&#8221;\u00a0 There were more food sample vendors than pieces of art inside the building.\u00a0 Outside was this boring pop band.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZaxhSS9I\/AAAAAAAABrs\/dIMPtD8MdmA\/s800\/IMG_3486.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"422\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We passed a punk rock (ish) band on Spring street that reminded me a little of Tokyo Police Club.\u00a0 As we walked by they mentioned that they were playing this weekend somewhere in Little Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZasgIuLI\/AAAAAAAABrk\/ory4nt6_FrQ\/s800\/IMG_3489.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Down at the end of Spring we came to the Temple of Visions gallery.\u00a0 I believe I read recently that Alex Gray had something to do with setting up the gallery, which makes perfect sense.\u00a0 Unlike last month, a lot of the art was new this time.\u00a0 One that stood out to me was this $35,000 piece by <a href=\"www.tendreams.org\/safonkin.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Victor Safonkin<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eurosurrealism.com\/fshop\/big\/They%20Come%20with%20Clean%20Water.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Temple had several (at least three each) pieces by James Zar and his son Chet.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/templeofvisions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/MG_3947.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/templeofvisions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/MG_3969.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"474\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was also a really intricate pen drawing by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bentolman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Tolman<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/templeofvisions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/jump.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"377\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<p>More samples from the Temple <a href=\"http:\/\/templeofvisions.com\/artists\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Next door was the Hive of course.\u00a0 There were a few stand-out pieces. I have to say the art there the last two months eclipses May&#8217;s show by far.\u00a0 Here are some samples&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zhibit.org\/image\/58f83a60-049ce02505-42f0c202-l-0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"270\" \/>\u00a0I hate steampunk, but this piece by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zhibit.org\/image\/58f83a60-049ce02505-42f0c202-l-0.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Jessica Van Hulle<\/a>\u00a0was nice.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_Jmy9BAEYgnw\/S-zvoA69GzI\/AAAAAAAAAgw\/qrxgiDMEDPk\/s1600\/Th20.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"347\" height=\"648\" \/>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/junsportfolio.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jun Alvarado<\/a>\u00a0had a lot of pieces &#8211; of which this was one, but not one of my favorites.\u00a0 The ones I liked were very well drawn ink drawings (?) of octopuses, sharks, etc.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vansaro.com\/images\/slippin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"574\" height=\"391\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/vansaro.com\" target=\"_blank\">Van Saro<\/a>\u00a0was featured at the front of the gallery and had several great pieces.\u00a0 The technique on display was pretty crazy.\u00a0 The best graffiti artists easily transfer their skills to traditional art.\u00a0 Here Van Saro mixes both of them on canvas in oil.\u00a0 The lighting on this piece was especially captivating.\u00a0 He puts a lot of rocks in his pieces and the level of detail adds to the dramatic nature.\u00a0 On the other side of the entrance was this tarot card reader.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZZ47e0AI\/AAAAAAAABrU\/oQB3XOu1Cjg\/s800\/IMG_3505.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"681\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Below is a photo of my work at the Hive.\u00a0 The Hive usually requests work under 11&#215;14 &#8211; of which I have nearly nothing &#8211; so it is always interesting figuring out what I can fit in there.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdbUIGigWI\/AAAAAAAABss\/As1wSJdFn5U\/s800\/IMG_3500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We actually had a good parking spot this time, east of 5th on Spring &#8211; basically in the heart of the &#8220;action.&#8221;\u00a0 As we walked back down the north side of Spring towards 5th we saw more bands and &#8230;stuff&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZYpjzOFI\/AAAAAAAABq8\/DSc_eT6wGj4\/s800\/IMG_3521.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZXiWaBaI\/AAAAAAAABqs\/V-m-3qkL3wU\/s800\/IMG_3531.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"518\" height=\"800\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZZv1xW3I\/AAAAAAAABrM\/MJZDQ2m5L00\/s800\/IMG_3517.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>People in Los Angeles have a reputation for terrible parking.\u00a0 Here is a sample.\u00a0 This idiot was trying to use the extra three feet in front of this meter parked Jeep.\u00a0 He actually smashed his bumper against the Jeep and just left like that.\u00a0 From the looks of his bumper this probably isn&#8217;t the first time he&#8217;s done it.\u00a0 Wish I had enough money to treat a Mercedes like that&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZabynghI\/AAAAAAAABrc\/bsjAlbgI_i8\/s800\/IMG_3507.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was a police escorted parade of bikes (with a lot of the ridiculous tall ones) that went by quickly.\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t able to get a good shot, but here is the tail end turning right up 6th (?).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZYxvGn3I\/AAAAAAAABrE\/4X9Uzn79ezw\/s800\/IMG_3518.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"345\" \/><\/p>\n<p>yes, that is a stuffed dear head&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZXZ2KYPI\/AAAAAAAABqk\/1t72ozWZC5Q\/s800\/IMG_3533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"634\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TDdZYMgXV8I\/AAAAAAAABq0\/9BuUgTblBEQ\/s800\/IMG_3530.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"490\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Like any other 2nd Thursday of the month, Sam and I met up for the Art Walk downtown.\u00a0 After walking through the new &#8220;Art Mart&#8221; at 501 5th ave. we met up with Garen.
