{"id":1740,"date":"2010-08-13T06:46:59","date_gmt":"2010-08-13T14:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=1740"},"modified":"2010-08-13T09:14:34","modified_gmt":"2010-08-13T17:14:34","slug":"art-walk-august","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=1740","title":{"rendered":"Art Walk August"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was going to this art walk by myself, so I decided to wait for the traffic to die down to make my way downtown.\u00a0 Of course, this also meant the crowds would be bigger and the parking would be harder.\u00a0 The regular parking lots have been increasing their prices every time.\u00a0 One that used to be $5 was now $8 and full by the time I got there.\u00a0 Others further down on Spring that used to be $5 now expected an ungodly sum of $15.\u00a0 Ten minutes of cruising around netted me a completely free parking spot on 5th and main.\u00a0 Of course, it came with a catch.\u00a0 As soon as I put the car in park my passenger door opened and an old strange looking woman with a cigarette proceeded to insert herself (with my pushing her out) in my passenger seat.\u00a0 When she was nearly all the way inside she finally stopped babbling and looked to her left and jumped out.<\/p>\n<p>After getting over that trauma I locked up and made my way one block south.\u00a0 Actually &#8211; not even an entire block south as the entrance to the &#8220;Art Fair&#8221; is on 5th halfway between main and broadway.\u00a0 Inside it was largely exactly the same as the past few months, except with more people now.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVo53RCYTI\/AAAAAAAAB0E\/s43foOkjX-A\/s800\/IMG_3786.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Apparently cheaply made artwork sells better if sitting on chairs&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVo56MU4bI\/AAAAAAAABz8\/Ih2WIWawPI4\/s800\/IMG_3788.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Down the street I decided to go to the &#8220;upstairs&#8221; gallery (no idea what it is really called).\u00a0 There was a bit of a line to go up when I got there &#8211; but nothing compared to when I left.\u00a0 In fact, we had to wait in line just to leave.\u00a0 After exiting the building I took a shot of the line to get in (below).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVo4wVgHTI\/AAAAAAAABzs\/v9EdpQwSBtk\/s800\/IMG_3795.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"688\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Across the street I took a shot of the line to get in.\u00a0 The entrance is on the extreme right in the photo below &#8211; and you can see the line of people waiting to get in extending all the way to the left down the block.\u00a0 You can see people IN\u00a0the gallery in the lighted windows on the second floor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVo0rx6dDI\/AAAAAAAAByU\/7XpIBgNhm88\/s800\/IMG_3829.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"276\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So the art up there must have been really great for all those people to wait in line to see it, right?\u00a0\u00a0 &#8230;. judge for yourself&#8230;. (photo below is from inside the gallery)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVo5eYm-EI\/AAAAAAAABz0\/X-iXUA0Obcg\/s800\/IMG_3794.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the huge corner galleries was bought up by condo renovators (or something) a few months ago, but this month half the gallery was opened back up &#8211; although (as you&#8217;ll see in the below photo) it looked like the building was still in some state of construction.\u00a0 The art was bad (as to be expected) but I had to laugh at the artist below.\u00a0 Not only is his art horribly simple line drawings of sex &#8211; but he had the audacity to try and run around (in an all-white suit, no less) and stop people from taking photos of it.\u00a0 With thousands of people on the art walk &#8211; stopping all cameras from shooting was going to be tough &#8211; and he didn&#8217;t catch me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVo4q9V6PI\/AAAAAAAABzk\/6il1YAd_SiU\/s800\/IMG_3798.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Down the street another gallery (or coffee shop?) had someone dancing in the window and huge crowds starting to show up.\u00a0 When I looked closer I saw it was one of those gay nun guys.\u00a0 The same guys that we saw on the art walk last month.\u00a0 These guys are part of some equality organization &#8211; as they&#8217;ve started travelling and showing up at the <a href=\"http:\/\/prop8trialtracker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">NOM counter protests<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVo4ViVxqI\/AAAAAAAABzc\/gMkgQNo83ck\/s800\/IMG_3801.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"235\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the other side of the street a gallery that used to be flush with pieces (although usually not good) was dark.\u00a0 I walked in to see these three guys fiddling with guitar distortion (the guy on the left has a guitar) while projecting a web site (or something) onto the wall with a motorcycle sitting in between them and the wall.\u00a0 Not good.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVo4MebrSI\/AAAAAAAABzU\/OTTt4TKdCmQ\/s800\/IMG_3807.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"333\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;arts and crafts fair&#8221; as I&#8217;m calling it was back across the street from the Regent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVo3vHoRhI\/AAAAAAAABzM\/oFERmYJ4Euk\/s800\/IMG_3812.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Further down the street there was a note on the window of the bank building that the &#8220;vendors&#8221; had moved to 333.\u00a0 I never found 333, but on both sides of the street were parking lots filled to the brim with food trucks.\u00a0 On the south side of the street there was a new apartment\/condo\/lofts building opening up with a large patio area with tables and chairs\u00a0&#8211; which made things very convenient for the food trucks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVo2YZAoaI\/AAAAAAAABzE\/-AtcvE10eOo\/s800\/IMG_3814.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"490\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVo2ER6VLI\/AAAAAAAABy8\/IBdZea5MLxc\/s800\/IMG_3815.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I kept thinking &#8220;a prius and a palm tree&#8221; when I saw this girl&#8230; like a long lost Dr. Seuss book.\u00a0 Over at the Bang Gallery the Where&#8217;s Waldo Troupe was performing their smash hit: Looking like idiots opening and closing umbrellas while jumping up and down on a crowded street.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVo15aAYvI\/AAAAAAAABy0\/jFQeymO3Z_k\/s800\/IMG_3823.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"430\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Inside Bang things didn&#8217;t get much better.\u00a0 The main attraction was this thing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVo1R2C_AI\/AAAAAAAABys\/dQ3XEqTBB7A\/s800\/IMG_3824.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back up the street (heading west now) this fellow parked his truck and was trying to make some sort of point (I think).\u00a0 His truck says:<\/p>\n<p>God made ape (something)<\/p>\n<p>Ape makes gun<\/p>\n<p>Gun makes ape (something)<\/p>\n<p>Ape guns God down<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;&gt;\u00a0 I took this as a sign from god (for what I don&#8217;t know, but I&#8217;ll find something later) since I&#8217;m currently reading The God Delusion and there is no such thing as a coincidence!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVo1F-em3I\/AAAAAAAAByk\/2E0rwMOdIU8\/s800\/IMG_3826.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"756\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVo01UUIsI\/AAAAAAAAByc\/gPN9hyTXE6w\/s800\/IMG_3827.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;POEMS &#8211; your poem your price&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVoz9D7wnI\/AAAAAAAAByM\/zRIkvdb1MP0\/s800\/IMG_3833.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"762\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This alleyway band had a more expensive set-up than most.\u00a0 There were a lot of bible thumpersstanding around.\u00a0 It was unclear whether they were associated with the band or not &#8211; which scared people away from dancing, which is why there was a large space between the band and crowd.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/immortalmurals.weebly.com\/uploads\/1\/8\/6\/4\/1864211\/5408828.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"507\" \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The number of people on this art walk was more than any I&#8217;ve ever seen.\u00a0 Every little shop owner made sure they had something to sell.\u00a0 Many little teeny tiny galleries are springing up.\u00a0 Most of them, as usual, had nothing of any quality to offer.\u00a0 One little one called (not realizing the irony, I&#8217;m sure) &#8220;Immortal Gallery&#8221; had this painting by Ryoko Yokohama which I liked.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVozriliYI\/AAAAAAAAByE\/r-cLSXC1egM\/s800\/IMG_3837.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"343\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Above is another band I saw on Spring heading west.\u00a0 Every month the band in this space seems to have drag queens.\u00a0 Even down at the Hive the crowds were still strong and strangely extending beyond that point, which is what I&#8217;ve always considered the very end of the art walk.\u00a0 The Temple of Visions didn&#8217;t have many new paintings (they must keep each show up for two months at a time).\u00a0 The painter below was trying to do a live portrait in a very cramped space.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVozb1osPI\/AAAAAAAABx8\/0Hwl3ZDI4BY\/s800\/IMG_3844.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"588\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Temple of Visions decided to use their large open space in the front to sell hipster clothes. Not sure how I feel about this.\u00a0 It kinda cheapens what they&#8217;re supposed to be about and draws the wrong crowd in my opinion.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_ft-qCjvrMks\/TGVozLBLlVI\/AAAAAAAABx0\/4QCWsVMvHMw\/s800\/IMG_3845.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"549\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Over at the Hive there was lots of good stuff.\u00a0 The show was supposed to be about eroticism &#8211; but most of the art didn&#8217;t go for shock value (thank goodness).\u00a0 Of course there were a few pieces that tried to shock (as if anybody could be shocked by sexuality in 2010) like a dildo gun (didn&#8217;t Giger do that 40 years ago??), a large photo blowup of a exposed girl that looked like a minor, and so on.\u00a0 Unfortunately my piece was NOT in the show.\u00a0 I was notified a few days before the opening that my piece would have to wait until next month as it was just too big.\u00a0 And it was true.\u00a0 There really weren&#8217;t any other pieces in the group room (or even in the front rooms) that approached the 2&#8217;x4&#8242; size of my painting.\u00a0 I know I need to start making smaller work for the Hive &#8211; but &#8230; I always end up making bigger pieces&#8230; I can&#8217;t help it.<\/p>\n<p>The following two paintings were in the front rooms.\u00a0 They were done by Janet Kim, who I can&#8217;t find a current web site for.\u00a0 I found a blog of hers from 2007 where she complained she was terrible at painting.\u00a0 I think she&#8217;s come a long way since that blog&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hivegallery.com\/ssp_director\/p.php?a=XF9VXis%2FOCcqYHtlPzIwJzo6JisxOzouNyowMS4jKyAiPjQjJjs%2FNCY7LiM%3D\" alt=\"\" width=\"493\" height=\"715\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hivegallery.com\/ssp_director\/p.php?a=XF9VXis%2FOCYqYHtlPzIwJzo6JisxOzouNyowMS4jKyAiPjQjJjs%2FNCY7LiM%3D\" alt=\"\" width=\"497\" height=\"715\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Walking back on Spring towards 5th to go to my car I passed more bands.\u00a0 This one was performing with no space at all but managing to do some very energetic Led Zeppelin covers.\u00a0 It was hard to take a photograph as the sidewalk was packed.\u00a0 This photo was culled from a string of photos taken standing on the street with my hand as high up in the air as I could get&#8230;waiting for a slight break in the crowd.\u00a0 In fact, in the other photos &#8211;
