{"id":2165,"date":"2011-09-19T15:20:17","date_gmt":"2011-09-19T23:20:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=2165"},"modified":"2011-09-20T13:11:16","modified_gmt":"2011-09-20T21:11:16","slug":"synchronicity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=2165","title":{"rendered":"Synchronicity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I knew my father had been to Thailand when he was in the Air Force. \u00a0In fact, I knew he&#8217;d been to Bangkok and was stationed at Udorn before it was an &#8220;official&#8221; base. \u00a0Bangkok seems to be an entirely different city now, except for the Grand Palace, which has remained exactly the same. \u00a0Bangkok was a much smaller place in 1965, with none of the bright colors and &#8220;mixed&#8221;\u00a0architecture\u00a0of today. \u00a0Although my dad has expressed interest in going back, I have a feeling he would recognize almost nothing in the new Bangkok. \u00a0 Despite this it turns out that on my trip I would end up standing in many of the same spots that he did in 1965. \u00a0\u00a0We even took\u00a0Don Muang Airport to Phuket, which is apparently an airport that my father flew into or out of (or both) 46 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Don Muang in 1965:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-Rj_RGQfxr8k\/TnjJRDht1SI\/AAAAAAAAFkA\/d2DGoK10qWU\/s800\/65-01-03-bangkok-airport.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"421\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Don Muang today (not my picture, but exactly what it looked like):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.donmuangairportonline.com\/images\/dm7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Don Muang today is actually an underused mostly empty airport. \u00a0It felt like a ghost town when we were there. \u00a0This is due to the opening a few years ago of a brand new international airport on the other side of town.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that didn&#8217;t change at all is the Grand Palace, which has stood looking virtually identical for over two hundred years. \u00a0Take a look for yourself:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-JraI8-9XEOw\/TnjJRUQLsoI\/AAAAAAAAFkE\/tsgri2Z7RJo\/s800\/66-03-31-palace-grounds.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"372\" \/><\/p>\n<p>even the trees are the same&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-DWN3jr0gnQI\/TnDOMzvwV2I\/AAAAAAAAFgM\/2B9Csxqnx2E\/s800\/DSC05972.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-NjsrEVx4w7A\/TnjJRSuYz_I\/AAAAAAAAFkI\/kvK9Q4lVUXc\/s800\/66-03-29-green-bud.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"551\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ve added a rope and removed the red carpet, but that&#8217;s about all that&#8217;s changed to this building.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-JKYNm49ZuPU\/TnDOSyawk8I\/AAAAAAAAFi0\/gP1v15fg8BU\/s800\/DSC06008.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"532\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have a feeling if we visited the Udorn area things would be more as my father remembers. \u00a0The closest we would go to Udorn would be a few hundred miles west in Lampang Province, but in the north there isn&#8217;t much development outside major cities (of which, I understand, there are few).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I knew my father had been to Thailand when he was in the Air Force. \u00a0In fact, I knew he&#8217;d been to Bangkok and was stationed at Udorn before it was an &#8220;official&#8221;
