{"id":2197,"date":"2011-11-30T06:50:33","date_gmt":"2011-11-30T14:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=2197"},"modified":"2011-11-30T11:48:31","modified_gmt":"2011-11-30T19:48:31","slug":"thanksgiving-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=2197","title":{"rendered":"Thanksgiving weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the weekend before thanksgiving Sam and I went to Costco to pick out a wine to bring to our friends&#8217; house on Thanksgiving. \u00a0Sam decided to get an extra bottle of Moscato to drink with our dinner of crab legs and lobster bisque. \u00a0We like the wine and ended up finishing the bottle while watching Awakenings. \u00a0That was all that was available on Hulu and Sam had never seen it before&#8230; don&#8217;t judge!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-JHFs-KH0iUI\/TtGxfXfQVUI\/AAAAAAAAFv0\/xwA7bM8kU6s\/s600\/DSC06329.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On Thanksgiving day we headed to the auto show. \u00a0I&#8217;d been to the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=19\" target=\"_blank\">Columbus Auto Show<\/a> in 2004 and the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=648\" target=\"_blank\">LA Auto Show in 2008<\/a>. \u00a0I think I went to the auto show shortly after moving to Los Angeles as well, but I don&#8217;t remember when. \u00a0This show was probably the best. \u00a0Not necessarily because the cars were any better but because I went with Sam, who was looking at new cars to replace her lease-ending Accord. \u00a0 We stopped at the Lexus area pretty early on.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-DwXdnpmT-Yg\/TtGxfj7C5NI\/AAAAAAAAFv8\/fFMD9VCzR44\/s600\/DSC06330.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"339\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The BMW booth was nearby and featured two concept cars that are being used for the upcoming Mission Impossible #46,000 film; apparently they&#8217;re electric powered.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-ppFlGz8ap1I\/TtGxf2FSt9I\/AAAAAAAAFwM\/N-m2pTyH85I\/s600\/DSC06334.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"363\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The new M3 looks not that different from the old, but I really liked the matte teal color.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border-style: initial; border-color: initial;\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-vV9Upu2PvNo\/TtGxfvfTZ6I\/AAAAAAAAFv4\/3yxjelbKnZM\/s600\/DSC06333.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Later, at the Toyota booth we hoped to see the new &#8220;little prius&#8221; that looks really cool in the tv spots. \u00a0In the tv spots it is a gray version of this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allaboutauto.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/toyota-prius-c-concept-up-close-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll post the commercial below and you can skip ahead to 36 and 45 seconds in to see the &#8220;c&#8221; car:<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/z25yuguKgls?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/z25yuguKgls?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>At the Toyota booth we thought we&#8217;d find the final production model. \u00a0When we looked for it we were presented with this (excuse my language, but I believe it&#8217;s necessary to emphasize the mammoth wave of\u00a0disappointment\u00a0we felt)\u00a0boring piece of shit:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/autofixx.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2013-toyota-prius-c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"345\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sorry, kicking a Yaris in a few spots and dropping in a battery is not what I consider a &#8220;cool&#8221; looking car. \u00a0Why bother making a cool concept and then using the Yaris&#8230;why not just offer a hybrid Yaris? \u00a0We actually couldn&#8217;t believe this was the same model from the commercials (I didn&#8217;t remember it was called the &#8220;C&#8221; at the time) and so we climbed up the stairs to a sort of &#8220;bridge&#8221; area that Toyota had thinking it might be hidden up there. \u00a0There was nothing substantial (no cars) up there, but I did take a shot of the hall. \u00a0You can only see a small section of the hall due to the hanging banners and floor to ceiling booths.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-yuLVH3g8fm4\/TtGxgiVO4HI\/AAAAAAAAFwU\/0fBzjSUHxwc\/s600\/DSC06336.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The only thing notable at the GM area was this hot wheels looking Camaro:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-OmflkyeXzrI\/TtGxhCz1FXI\/AAAAAAAAFwc\/8T1C-EE25SM\/s902\/DSC06337.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"902\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I had hoped that the LA Auto Show would feature the unveiling of the US version of the FT-86 Toyota production model. \u00a0Unfortunately all they had was the Scion concept, which has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frs-scion.com\/?gclid=COmF78WK3awCFRNb7AodwAK6qA\" target=\"_blank\">up on the we<\/a>b for a while now.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-gC0PRnrknrU\/TtGxhQE6PWI\/AAAAAAAAFwg\/2APQh4YrBBc\/s600\/DSC06343.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The car looks nice and is competing in a small market consisting of really only the Hyundai Genesis coupe and nothing else. I may save up and get a second generation one in a few years if the interior is as nice as the exterior. \u00a0Unfortunately, over the long weekend some official photos and specs leaked out for the Japanese version of this car &#8211; the real deal Toyota GT86; and the interior is as plain looking as the spy shots seen last month. \u00a0The exterior is better than anything else in it&#8217;s price range though:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/stwot.motortrend.com\/files\/2011\/11\/Toyota-GT-86-side-view-623x389.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"389\" \/><\/p>\n<p>but I couldn&#8217;t look at this interior every day and be satisfied. \u00a0It looks like a 1998 Mazda Miata:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.carrios.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Toyota-GT-86-Interior-Picture-Design-Carrios.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"406\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/image.motortrend.com\/f\/9507612%2Bw750\/112_0609_04z%2B2006_mazda_mx5_miata%2Binterior.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Boooooooring! \u00a0I was hoping they&#8217;d stick closer to the awesome concept interior:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tune86.com\/sites\/default\/files\/pictures_photos\/2010\/03\/05_Toyota_FT86_concept_design_sketches_ED2_interior_dashboard.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"361\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They didn&#8217;t even keep the flat bottom steering wheel&#8230; how hard would that have been? \u00a0Oh well&#8230; moving on we found the Jaguar CX-16 concept that actually looks really nice:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-lcPFhGbp9sI\/TtGxh-w6TII\/AAAAAAAAFws\/flkQ5NQwPjE\/s902\/DSC06351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"902\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It looks pretty close to being production ready, hopefully not much changes.<\/p>\n<p>We also saw a new electric Audi convertible called (this is a dumb reference to a movie already a year old) the &#8220;e-tron&#8221; that probably won&#8217;t ever see the light of day on a real road:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-Xb6kuvDm1y8\/TtGxiHUwQZI\/AAAAAAAAFw4\/Jl0QGd0w8-s\/s600\/DSC06361.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-WECzJRCBNLk\/TtGxiGk6lpI\/AAAAAAAAFw0\/lhZAggefm2Q\/s600\/DSC06363.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"414\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Below is a\u00a0Cadillac\u00a0concept based on the old 1967 El Dorado. \u00a0Weird color choice, but I like it. \u00a0My pictures here don&#8217;t show the VERY pointy back end &#8211; concept car. \u00a0To me it looks like a melted 5 series (which isn&#8217;t necessarily an insult) on the outside, but the inside is what was so great.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-InIxldDXZW8\/TtGxjOoCe-I\/AAAAAAAAFxU\/KMp5ZKWgzWc\/s600\/DSC06370.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/pinoytutorial.com\/techtorial\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/volvo-you-concept-vehicle-exterior.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"567\" height=\"284\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/rahmadi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/2011-Volvo-Concept-You-05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/autoeuropecar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/2012-Volvo-You-Concept-Seats-580x384.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Later, in the skinny hall for luxury\/super cars we came across the Doking.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-qtH_eKP-9mk\/TtGxjmJ2u2I\/AAAAAAAAFxc\/fKJanH4__u0\/s600\/DSC06371.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sam said it reminded her of some cute anime character&#8217;s car. \u00a0There were two people sitting in the car, which made us think that we&#8217;d get to sit in it as there was apparently a line (see the right of the photo above), but it turned out the characters in the car were hired models.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/XgZP0yeG8qk?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/XgZP0yeG8qk?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in the supercar hall was my favorite, the\u00a0Aston\u00a0Martins. \u00a0Apparently the AM crew is so snooty they figured nobody needed to show up on Thanksgiving or even turn on their displays.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-eXzJTbE1UEc\/TtGxkDH9mBI\/AAAAAAAAFxk\/vOzghA4ua6o\/s845\/DSC06373.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"845\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the other end of the supercar hall we came across a Nintendo booth promoting the new Mario Kart release on the Nintendo DS. \u00a0I had erroneously assumed I could actually sit in the life-size working Karts on display. \u00a0When we went to the booth we were informed that we could not sit in them. \u00a0The booth had many stations where attendees could play a 4 person pick-up game of Kart on a DS. \u00a0We played two or three matches and then Sam got tired of it. \u00a0I guess she didn&#8217;t spend her entire college career playing Mario Kart 64 like I did (and many many years playing Super Mario Kart before that). \u00a0I couldn&#8217;t decide if I liked the 3D on or off (there is a toggle switch on the new DS).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-HgaFkdfB0BE\/TtGxkbgVzEI\/AAAAAAAAFxw\/epNK2R6CL1c\/s600\/DSC06375.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An aftermarket parts manufacturer had a booth along the wall connecting two of the halls and they covered it with succulents.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-jA3ELxqKVbc\/TtGxmRGXMBI\/AAAAAAAAFyI\/v0hTKQhXPfk\/s902\/DSC06378.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"902\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next we came to the second large hall of the convention center. \u00a0The first booth we visited was Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-ZC_OLJuSYwk\/TtGxlKayj-I\/AAAAAAAAFx0\/FsXea3xLeks\/s600\/DSC06379.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"357\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-YmxKtxlUwS0\/TtGxmBXTiPI\/AAAAAAAAFyE\/2CiZaibJdBw\/s600\/DSC06380.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some of the new lincolns feature the &#8220;mylincoln touch&#8221; system. \u00a0This system is unassuming when you see it, but when you touch it you&#8217;ll be impressed. \u00a0It&#8217;s basically flat surfaces that react to your touch (with lights). \u00a0The technical term is capacitive touch sensing.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a simple solution that has been in place (like the power button on my 2007 30&#8243; dell computer monitor) for a long time, but never attempted in an automobile. \u00a0 It has a very classy feel. \u00a0This combined with the cool dual-sided LCD driver&#8217;s information display in the new MKS was, in my opinion, the best actual production car interior (under $100,000). \u00a0I was very surprised to find this in a lincoln. \u00a0The touch display is available on two or three cars now, but the new LCD driver info display won&#8217;t be on one until about May of next year when the 2013 MKS hits dealers. \u00a0I looked the car up online later and found it to have a surprising amount of cool tech gadgets and so on for what is essentially, let&#8217;s face it, an &#8220;old people&#8221; border-color: initial;\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-OoU1c6jeEe0\/TtGxoqhs3hI\/AAAAAAAAFy4\/xRo5l_Sa2IY\/s902\/DSC06386.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"902\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When we came to the Fiat area Sam (the fashion designer) was immediately drawn to the Gucci Edition Fiat 500.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-TZ-Uygah0ws\/TtGxntq8INI\/AAAAAAAAFyc\/mKn2_2ieoEA\/s600\/DSC06393.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This was unexpected as she hates the mini cooper, which looks virtually the same to me. \u00a0It was explained to me that the Gucci looks much &#8220;cuter&#8221; (which I read as &#8220;feminine&#8221;). \u00a0However, by the next day Sam&#8217;s affection for the little car had waned so much that we didn&#8217;t even include in our list of cars for her to test drive.<\/p>\n<p>Porsche had rented out their own small hall (or large room) at the convention center. \u00a0The exteriors are very pretty, but the interiors (like most of the luxury cars we saw hovering around six figure price tags) are pretty basic and the center console always looks like it&#8217;s ripped from a 2001\u00a0Chevy\u00a0Malibu.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-K8wINcJvyNs\/TMynaCTtE5I\/AAAAAAAAC64\/o_3dskwX-DI\/IMGP5998.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Remove the navigation screen and do you really see a $90,000 difference between the center stacks?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/image.europeancarweb.com\/f\/29097596\/epcp_1009_02_o+2011_911_carrera_GTS+Interior.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even the great Porsche still uses black plastic buttons all in a row&#8230; from the name and it&#8217;s supposed to be dumb?&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-eVksvjHPmDI\/TtGxp4qw1SI\/AAAAAAAAFzY\/xVTX-507ohc\/s600\/DSC06424.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was a cool rat-fink roadster:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-CuRZG6FeniA\/TtGxrdQ-I7I\/AAAAAAAAFzo\/3U-kka7SRpk\/s902\/DSC06427.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"902\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had ended up parking near the valet entrance and on our way out the first car in valet was this spotless old Lotus Esprit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-g-k83LhxtDg\/TtGxqYjdtPI\/AAAAAAAAFzg\/UctKYofCyCo\/s600\/DSC06433.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"372\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After leaving the show we went straight to Arcadia to join the Thanksgiving meal of a friend&#8217;s parents.<\/p>\n<p>The next day Sam agreed to help me clean out my closet. \u00a0The stack below is what came OUT.
