{"id":2234,"date":"2012-01-30T14:47:46","date_gmt":"2012-01-30T22:47:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=2234"},"modified":"2012-02-01T14:48:08","modified_gmt":"2012-02-01T22:48:08","slug":"seattle-8f-trip-day-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=2234","title":{"rendered":"Seattle 8F trip day 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Sunday morning Byron and Christine took us to one of their favorite (extremely hipster infested) breakfast places, <a href=\"http:\/\/oddfellowscafe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">OddFellows<\/a>. \u00a0I can see why Byron likes it though, it&#8217;s completely his style; old turn of the century (or earlier) appliances, furniture, everything. \u00a0Their &#8220;key&#8221; logo even looks like one of Byron&#8217;s drawings (I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised if he did their logo and was too humble to mention it to us). \u00a0The food was good, and I freaked out everyone around us when I dribbled the chocolate beignet sauce on my\u00a0sandwich. \u00a0The\u00a0sandwich\u00a0had many other &#8220;sweet&#8221; elements to it, so it actually went together with the chocolate quite well.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-b8jwFe7wJBM\/TyiDJF8pgfI\/AAAAAAAAGVg\/Fv-8x8yQIqk\/w600\/DSC06971.jpg\" alt=\"DSC06971.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-p-Ug1AzGovw\/TyiDIQRfJyI\/AAAAAAAAGVQ\/P7ha7H3toxc\/w600\/DSC06972.jpg\" alt=\"DSC06972.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After breakfast Christine dropped us off at the pier and Sam and I headed to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattleaquarium.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">aquarium<\/a>. \u00a0The aquarium wasn&#8217;t bad, but it paled in comparison to the Long Beach Aquarium. \u00a0It was a very kid-centric experience, and focused more on coral reefs and brightly colored tropical fish than larger more complicated exhibits at other aquariums (like the king crab aquarium, jellyfish tank, or manta-ray tank at Long Beach).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-VZdM3ZRizuA\/TyiDIJF5riI\/AAAAAAAAGVM\/Pggnw59XnOs\/w600\/DSC06977.jpg\" alt=\"DSC06977.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were two octopi at the aquarium, but both were unfortunately asleep when we went through.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-XO7wGiwudrk\/TyiDHjlEkII\/AAAAAAAAGVA\/UUKuZPjRJ2I\/w600\/DSC06981.jpg\" alt=\"DSC06981.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-Ugz5Ao8Chi4\/TyiDII2r3dI\/AAAAAAAAGVc\/p4HMVvoEEnw\/w600\/DSC06986.jpg\" alt=\"DSC06986.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-v68oneyPWfQ\/TyiDJC9t8EI\/AAAAAAAAGVs\/SfGObS1qQdA\/w600\/DSC06987.jpg\" alt=\"DSC06987.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sam wanted a photo of the baby puffins really badly. \u00a0Her camera wasn&#8217;t fast enough to get a good shot. \u00a0I quickly discovered that through the rain and reflections mine wasn&#8217;t either.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-9PdtDEMyleE\/TyiC9HKLfzI\/AAAAAAAAGR8\/uLkWKwyI0LY\/w600\/DSC06992.jpg\" alt=\"DSC06992.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-HwQELwsi4Lc\/TyiC9fuKyxI\/AAAAAAAAGS4\/5suKvBZgzC4\/w600\/DSC06994.jpg\" alt=\"DSC06994.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-F-LbHPIOVuY\/TyiC9lmxOZI\/AAAAAAAAGSM\/o1dEGj-1LIg\/w600\/DSC07003.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07003.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-LFQXVZAK72M\/TyiC9iO9jdI\/AAAAAAAAGSI\/eMBDpdk-cLo\/w600\/DSC07006.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07006.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The aquarium has a cool underwater dome. \u00a0It reminded me of that show SeaQuest 2032&#8230; that was on tv a long time ago.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-7poipk7l6jk\/TyiC-sWyH4I\/AAAAAAAAGSU\/HGxA-pvRxnY\/w600\/DSC07007.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07007.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-hdd24ergr6c\/TyiDElDlIhI\/AAAAAAAAGUY\/gogIpM_wUPs\/w600\/P1290444.JPG\" alt=\"P1290444.JPG\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When we walked by the seal tank there was a solitary seal that kept doing a loop quickly through the tank over and over and over. \u00a0He went so fast it was impossible to get a clear shot.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-Ybmr4ZJANFk\/TyiC-3dGBqI\/AAAAAAAAGSY\/JuuVC5-yQMs\/w600\/DSC07014.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07014.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the attractions of the aquarium was a new baby otter. \u00a0Like the octopi the otter was asleep as well. \u00a0The otter tank is half outdoors, so getting a good shot through the rain (and plentiful children) was a tad difficult.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-tSvQjB68tvw\/TyiC_dVzHxI\/AAAAAAAAGSo\/s8YljxtXsPE\/w600\/DSC07024.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07024.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t remember what these guys below even are (muskrats?), but they were all asleep too.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/--bpqCksIhL4\/TyiC_Quu0EI\/AAAAAAAAGS0\/sF1pzp66sIg\/w600\/DSC07030.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07030.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Instead of putting together a full size tank to house full-size jellyfish, the Seattle Aquarium went a different route and had a circular flowing tank you could walk through with baby (or maybe just small) jellyfish. \u00a0In person this is a cool exhibit, but photographing the jellyfish in any kind of aesthetically pleasing manner \u00a0is a bit of a challenge because of the reflectiveness of the curved surface and the transparency.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-3ydHfscsn74\/TyiDGY2mURI\/AAAAAAAAGUg\/DoScuISFtqE\/w600\/P1290409.JPG\" alt=\"P1290409.JPG\" width=\"600\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-e5L17VG8qiA\/TyiDAAOPVnI\/AAAAAAAAGTk\/XswdksEl59g\/w600\/DSC07036.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07036.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our next stop was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.argosycruises.com\/publiccruises\/harbor.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Argosy Harbor Cruise<\/a>. \u00a0While waiting we stopped by Starbucks and Sam posed with Elliott outside.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-RyqbXh90sCc\/TyiDARipeiI\/AAAAAAAAGTE\/sBEWT-istuo\/w600\/DSC07039.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07039.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The boat had little heat and I only made it worse by continually opening the windows to take photographs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-nahZ3URkQsU\/TyiDErpuVHI\/AAAAAAAAGUc\/VEx60lVM73o\/w600\/P1290454.JPG\" alt=\"P1290454.JPG\" width=\"600\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-OkKh3dSh0WI\/TyiDGQYPVXI\/AAAAAAAAGU8\/CLBe7vOKONU\/w600\/P1290459.JPG\" alt=\"P1290459.JPG\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The day was so rainy and gray though that even manipulating the photos in photoshop did little to remove the &#8220;blah&#8221; when we passed the sea lions sleeping on the bouy. \u00a0Most of the folks on the boat ran out to bark at the animals. \u00a0Sam and I sat in our seats, as sea lions are plentiful (and you can get much closer to them) in Malibu. \u00a0After the boat tour was over we headed to a restaurant in Belltown called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.local360.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Local360<\/a>. \u00a0I had fried chicken and cheese grits and Sam had steak frites. \u00a0Both seemed somehow slightly incomplete, but I have to say (I love cheese, remember), the cheesy polenta was delicious.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-ktNl-Ai-lww\/TyiDDbKguAI\/AAAAAAAAGT4\/KiXGBRCqzmg\/w600\/DSC07066.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07066.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After dinner we went to <a href=\"http:\/\/b-oespresso.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">B&amp;O<\/a> for some chocolate desserts. \u00a0Our waiter seemed like he was a drug-addled hipster, which became a constant source of amusement for us. \u00a0Afterwards Christine dropped Sam off at our hotel and Byron dropped Christine off at home. \u00a0Byron then took me to Queen Anne park to take some night shots and take care of more &#8220;shop talk&#8221; (this WAS a business trip, remember?). \u00a0By this time the rain was coming down slightly harder than a drizzle. \u00a0Taking long exposure photos was problematic because the only railing was kind of low and the rain kept dotting the lens (as well as producing more fog than preferred).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-YMCtPpYqv44\/TyiDC4qbq4I\/AAAAAAAAGTo\/ZEXHE3CMsQg\/w600\/DSC07068.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07068.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a few minutes at Queen Anne we headed to the haunted hospital (parking lot) on the other side of town. \u00a0The shots taken here, although dealing with the same wet conditions, proved much better as we found a sign pole with a relatively clear view.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-YsRNKuYktZw\/TyiDDqWjGII\/AAAAAAAAGUM\/Ed9q4ZsT-YU\/w600\/DSC07076.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07076.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The photo below is a zoomed in version of the photo above. \u00a0Here you can clearly see the difference in night shots between a stabilized (gorillapod) version and the Space Needle shakey-in-the-cold-hands version from two nights before.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border-style: initial; border-color: initial;\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-xCwPEmT8I80\/TyiDDU4RoGI\/AAAAAAAAGT0\/g0pvfif8lEc\/w600\/DSC07076-2.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07076-2.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<div>Around 10:30 Byron dropped me off at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hotel1000seattle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hotel1000<\/a> and I joined Sam in our room. \u00a0The hotel had upgraded us when I told them that I was a blogger and wanted to take &#8220;great city views.&#8221; \u00a0The room itself was fantastic, very modern. \u00a0The tub filled up from a spout in the ceiling. \u00a0The hotel even gave us two glasses of\u00a0champagne\u00a0and a cheese\/cracker plate when we checked in. \u00a0It was actually kind of\u00a0disappointing\u00a0that our time spent in the room was going to be very minimal. \u00a0The hotel has all kinds of other amenities that we didn&#8217;t even have time to check out.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-YidcMoNgzBU\/TyiDG1Wk0UI\/AAAAAAAAGUw\/BgBUd3ITZ-c\/w600\/P1290487.JPG\" alt=\"P1290487.JPG\" width=\"600\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-tt1cJmNJXpI\/TyiDG8TMCYI\/AAAAAAAAGUs\/bEXmEGwj42w\/w600\/P1290485.JPG\" alt=\"P1290485.JPG\" width=\"600\" \/><\/div>\n<div>Unfortunately, we were on the wrong side of the hotel to get the &#8220;great city views&#8221;
