{"id":2546,"date":"2013-08-18T11:10:56","date_gmt":"2013-08-18T19:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=2546"},"modified":"2013-08-18T11:10:56","modified_gmt":"2013-08-18T19:10:56","slug":"copro-anniversary-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=2546","title":{"rendered":"Copro Anniversary Show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After the bachelor party I got a bad cold. \u00a0It&#8217;s otherwise unmentionable except for the disappointing fact that it was the first time I&#8217;d been sick in nearly two years, so the counter was reset. \u00a0Fortunately Sam was still in China, so my being sick didn&#8217;t ruin any plans or make her sick. \u00a0Ironically she was sick at the same time on the other side of the world.<\/p>\n<p>In the following month we caught up on some sci-fi movies and had friends in from Thailand and Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday we went to Bergamot Station for Copro&#8217;s 20th Anniversary show. \u00a0There were a few other galleries open as well. \u00a0Most were filled with largely uninteresting paintings and photos, but there were a few interesting pieces:<\/p>\n<p>(as always, higher res versions <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/andrewlong\/sets\/72157635122614871\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3763\/9537873837_9d1ccecd7a.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7342\/9540664642_262de4cd2d.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3667\/9540665964_67ef51d318.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In one gallery we found one of the props (or a replica?) from the Clockwork Orange Korova Milk bBar:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7454\/9540667084_49c3433046.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In case your Kubrik memory isn&#8217;t as good as mine, scan the photo above for something that looks like this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"-webkit-user-select: none;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.phinnweb.org\/links\/cinema\/directors\/kubrick\/pic\/korova3.jpg\" width=\"551\" height=\"282\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another one (or the same one?) <a href=\"http:\/\/positiveape.tumblr.com\/post\/39793441784\/korova-milk-bar-sculpture-a-clockwork-orange\" target=\"_blank\">was in the LACMA Kubrik show not too long ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The sculptures in the film were an adaptation of similar pieces by Allen Jones.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5544\/9537879585_60e1cfa3ea.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2817\/9540670340_72763b8349.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5508\/9540671974_6b827e110a.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Under the sign for the &#8220;loft gallery&#8221; was a sculpture that I&#8217;d love to have.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2849\/9537884451_52177db42c.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7456\/9540674456_4190266a79.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7364\/9540707906_4d1e062353.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Upstairs in the loft were a few interesting sculptures that were made out of glass or acrylic. \u00a0One of them (not pictured here) had another image burned inside of the main sculpture.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3776\/9537886689_3f82c38a2d.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7281\/9540706426_7d93d0a12b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We walked on down the road (lot?) to Copro and were surprised to hear a lone piano echoing through the alley (road?) and no food truck in sight. \u00a0When we went round the bend we saw the piano was part of a one man band on a truck.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3702\/9540709752_2ce2fd1cbc.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2852\/9540677082_cbe9a94f93.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7316\/9537890235_256dc981c5.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"yui_3_7_3_3_1376849646765_499\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5521\/9537891869_9fa121c395.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2837\/9540682820_1a1b44b0ff.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The show was great, as usual. \u00a0Copro, along with a few Washington Blvd galleries are consistently the best source of &#8220;New Brow&#8221; art in the city (country? world?). \u00a0The popular thinking is that Los Angeles is morphing into the new art capital of the world. \u00a0 Doubt me? \u00a0On the way to Bergamot we passed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cartwheelart.com\/2013\/08\/17\/tarfest-craola-axis-team-up-on-la-brea\/\" target=\"_blank\">Craola and other artists painting a mural on La Brea<\/a>. \u00a0This was NOT the event we were going to, didn&#8217;t even know about it.<\/p>\n<p>The show at Copro was simply meant to be a celebration of becoming the mecca for this art movement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3779\/9537921353_cb61d25af0.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My favorites from the show (photos from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.copronason.com\/copro20\/index.html#32\" target=\"_blank\">Copro <\/a>or artist&#8217;s site\/s)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ditto_enlightned\" src=\"http:\/\/www.copronason.com\/copro20\/images\/ditto_enlightned.jpg\" border=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Leslie Ditto &#8211; On a Traveler&#8217;s Wing<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.copronason.com\/copro20\/images\/Dawn1.jpg\" width=\"570\" height=\"1200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mark Garro &#8211; Dawn<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"despain\" src=\"http:\/\/www.copronason.com\/copro20\/images\/despain.jpg\" border=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Brian Despain &#8211; Journeys. \u00a0This piece is about the size of the image you see above, maybe a little smaller. \u00a0The color and the detail that Brian put in this piece were captivating. \u00a0In real life there&#8217;s a glow to everything that can&#8217;t really be captured in a photograph. \u00a0Normally with paint (whether oil or acrylic) there is a reductive element to the color, making everything a bit duller. \u00a0Here Brian was able to achieve a glow almost like a digital painting from a monitor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 2px solid black;\" alt=\"z_s2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.copronason.com\/copro20\/images\/z_s2.jpg\" width=\"525\" height=\"373\" border=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Crystal Chan &#8211; A Time for the Innocents. \u00a0Crystal is one of my favorites, always making interesting atmospheric pieces. \u00a0Her rendering of flesh and skin is something I aspire to. \u00a0Not overly detailed, but enough color and shape to blend into nearly photo realism from a few feet away. \u00a0Look at the hand here, for me, this is the focal point of the whole piece (although there is clearly a lot going on elsewhere).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5533\/9537894741_d4363a9c45.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7361\/9540687020_c47b968620.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, take Crystal&#8217;s level of detail and multiply it exponentially and you get Eric Fortune. \u00a0I&#8217;ve followed Eric&#8217;s blog for many years to see his process. \u00a0It&#8217;s often painfully slow, but the results are amazing. \u00a0Eric paints ethereal and delicate pieces on paper building layers upon layers of thin color.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a_eric_fortune_the_demon_haunted_world\" src=\"http:\/\/www.copronason.com\/copro20\/images\/a_eric_fortune_the_demon_haunted_world.jpg\" border=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Eric Fortune &#8211;
