was raining, so much so that there were flood warnings, so we decided to drive to the other side of the Island to check out <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Waimea_Canyon_State_Park\" target=\"_blank\">waimea canyon<\/a>, hoping it would be dry when we got there. \u00a0As we drove through the look-outs it was still raining a bit.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F8ofPXHxXmA?rel=0\" height=\"315\" width=\"560\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii-guide.com\/kauai\/sights\/kalalau_lookout\" target=\"_blank\">Kalalau Lookout<\/a>, it was still very foggy, so much so that we could hardly see the coast.<\/p>\n<p><iframe trail you could stand on a rock and have the exhilarating experience of feeling the cool fog streaming by making a beeline for the ocean.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tJA9X_64t9c?rel=0\" height=\"315\" width=\"560\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3782\/12898230084_94e532a3cd_c.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0We hiked down maybe \u00be of a mile on the red slippery trail until coming to a section so muddy we\u2019d have to plunge in or go back, so we went back.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2879\/12898211794_2380803d72_c.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0We drove back down to the next lookout to use the restroom and the sun started peaking out, so we high-tailed it back to Kalalau and enjoyed about ten minutes in the sun with good visibility until the next bit of fog rolled overhead and down the cliffs, once again obscuring the view of the coastline.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3726\/12917706775_8fdb5d70a6.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The fog rolling over actually made the view and the experience much more dramatic and enjoyable for me than if it had just been a sunny day with clear sky. \u00a0Maybe that&#8217;s the Ohio genes in me. \u00a0Would have loved to follow that mud trail further around the cliffs on a sunny day though.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Umggsv9Xirg?rel=0\" height=\"315\" width=\"560\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As with everywhere in Hawaii, there were lots of chicken in the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3782\/12917718955_357e93a145.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We took the 552 road down (there are two routes out) to the southwest and headed up around the coast north to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiistateparks.org\/parks\/kauai\/polihale.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Polihale state park<\/a>. \u00a0The park is only accessible via a 5 mile long unfinished dirt (read: mudhole) road. \u00a0I think my brother\u2019s girlfriend, who bought a Jeep just to do things like this, would have loved it, but Sam was reticent at first.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7386\/12918204514_c76ee529e8.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Then we saw a rented mustang go by with two women inside. \u00a0If they could do it, we could do it. \u00a0None of this was a surprise, we\u2019d had the spot recommended to us by Byron\u2019s wife and she\u2019d warned about the rough of creeping along the extremely bumpy and muddy swiss cheese road we came to what has to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and watched the sunset. \u00a0Even the dunes back from the beach were amazing looking and had a backdrop of the majestic mountains that framed the canyon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We drove back out in the dark, which would have been terrifying if we hadn&#8217;t made it okay in the daylight earlier. \u00a0Every few seconds a brave frog would hop out in front of the headlights and we&#8217;d play a game of chicken (or frog) seeing who would move first.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Once out of the unfinished road it was a long dark drive up around the coast to Princeville. \u00a0Ironcially we were not that far from Princeville, but there isn&#8217;t a public road that connects the Polihale area to Hanalei Bay (west of princeville). \u00a0It felt a lot like driving in Ohio, we even passed a small-town fair with Hawaii&#8217;s version of rednecks eating cotton candy and riding those questionable whirly-gig things held together with duct tape.
