A plethora of birds soared about, even some crows. Sea lions basked on a faraway glacier and occasionally swam a few laps around the pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/ryQc6S\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8628\/16780449792_053e4df053_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC3043\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>(side note: seeing sea lions seems to be a big deal in Iceland and they&#8217;re very culturally significant. Ironically this was the one thing we didn&#8217;t really give a hoot about since we often go swimming with sea lions in La Jolla, or simply see them at Point Dume in Malibu)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/ryVVkp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7592\/16781567425_c063ee6e5a_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC3197\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We left and headed to the ice cave tour pickup, but we were early. One of the guides said we could high-tail it down the road to a Shell station that had a restaurant. In the restaurant, we had fried fish and au-gratin potatoes in five minutes before dashing back to the pick-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An hour later we were at the famous <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.extremeiceland.is\/en\/activity-tours-iceland\/glacier-hiking-iceland\/ice-caves\" target=\"_blank\">Vatnajokull crystal cave<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/ryVW6n\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7628\/16781569975_03e8935dd3_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC3209\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>The cave&#8217;s guard dog<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"crystal cave - ice cave - skaftafell - iceland\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XUuRn2i1GQQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the tour had been billed (and I do intend the pun) as a \u201cphotography tour,\u201d we only had 40 minutes to explore the cave. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/rhupZR\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8641\/16595526999_acfc2bdb30_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC3384\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>40 minutes in a small cave with three different tours, each of about 12 people. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/ryW8Bt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8584\/16781608725_96d2da6e59_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC3273\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can guess who got the short end of the stick when it came to taking photos: the couple that <em>didn&#8217;t<\/em> come in a group of ten friends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/qBWz8h\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8663\/16159287274_d4a55af811_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC3265\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/qCa416\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8648\/16161722393_b5269dbe60_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC3311\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, the experience was something we\u2019ll never forget. The walls of the cave are otherworldly and ethereally beautiful. We drove out to a little parking area and saw that it was a faraway viewpoint for one of the glaciers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That wasn\u2019t good enough for us so we walked as close to the glacial lake as we safely could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/ryQWzA\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8667\/16780596052_3f63e3d1e2_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC3492\" width=\"640\" height=\"341\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>All alone at the foot of a massive glacier and frozen lagoon. Jokarsarlon is bigger, but at this one we could walk right up and touch the glaciers, and the mountain the glacier is sliding down is much closer. More than anywhere else we\u2019d been to in Iceland thus far Fjallsarlon had an alien feel to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/ryQYDL\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8592\/16780603022_18eb1413ea_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC3530\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>And by Alien I mean the movie. Doesn&#8217;t this shape remind you of the Derelict?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time we left, it was getting dark, so we headed back to our hotel, stopping to eat at the only restaurant on the way. \u00a0At the restaurant we had Iceland Char, which is a less pink version of salmon, but with pink spots on the skin.
