We ubered to LAX and flew over eleven hours on Swiss Air to Zurich, landing around 4pm local time on Saturday. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=QXZvsGuKz0g\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=SKZKDline84\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Zurich airport is quite small but tidy and neat, like an airport built by Ikea. We took an easy\u00a0train into the\u00a0city and discovered &#8220;Zurich&#8217;s got talent&#8221; taping at the main rail station, just a short walk from our hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/H2foTr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7392\/26924752543_86af368f82_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC2455\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=SUmFtJvRpJk\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After settling in we went out to find dinner. We tried Rheinfelder Bierhalle as it looked open and not too busy. We weren&#8217;t sure what to expect in Switzerland, and our waiter was very rude when we asked questions about the menu. We gave up and ordered a salad and a vegetable plate (the traditional <b><i>raclette<\/i><\/b>). Both ended up being more cheese than anything else, which isn&#8217;t as good as it sounds. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We didn&#8217;t know it then, but we should have expected a certain &#8220;rudeness&#8221; in a bierhalle (beer hall = pub = bar), as German\/Swiss versions are set up for rowdy&nbsp;hearty drinkers who demand what they want from no-nonsense waiters. That said, unlike the Hofbr\u00e4uhaus&nbsp;in Munich, the Rheinfelder wasn&#8217;t boisterous&nbsp;when we walked in (or out) and nobody was sharing a table with a stranger.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After dinner, it started to lightly rain as we walked towards Linden. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=Fna97qCqt1M\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/HNgGtU\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7345\/27434249162_0314d2f3e9_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC2478\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the time we got to the lake heavy rain obscured the lights shining in the dark on the other side.&nbsp;We broke out our umbrella (the first time of many on the trip) and wandered back along the (mostly closed) shops on the western riverbanks.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/HWZYs8\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7207\/27533029555_b43484d453_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC2494\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunday we ate at a cafe before taking the train up to Uetliberg.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=uzEqOviajss\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=HSTTo4yGF58\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After hiking up the hill we discovered the automated entrance to the &#8220;top of Zurich&#8221; steel platform was broken. The platform offers the only view unobstructed by trees. Allergies, too, would become a staple of our trips to nature for the next three weeks.
