Since summer season was still officially a week away, <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alpenblick-zermatt.ch\/en\/welcome-hotel-alpenblick-zermatt\" target=\"_blank\">our hotel<\/a> was underbooked and gave us a free upgrade to a room that could see the famous pyramidal-shaped peak that most Americans recognize first as the centerpiece to a Disneyland ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/HBuj6f\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7504\/27312228840_795ea87cab_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC3412\" width=\"640\" height=\"405\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>soon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Zermatt has a more rugged and &#8220;authentic&#8221; atmosphere, full of old original looking wooden houses and livestock barns jammed up against hotels and watch shops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/HTdDGs\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7490\/27490236942_9622dd6fcf_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC3938\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>Remember: It was Tolkien who said cellar door was possibly the most beautiful sounding phrase in English. He may have been inspired by doors like this one in Zermatt on his visit here in 1911<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Our hotel restaurant had an intriguing menu so we opted to eat in for dinner. We enjoyed one of the best meals of our trip; Sam ordered a baked local fish and I struggling to finish what I can only call MegaGrilledCheese Sandwich (a baked dish of bread, fried eggs, bacon, cheese and more cheese with a hearty herb-laden tomato soup).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To burn off those calories we headed for the Matterhorn trail, which began a short walk down the street from our hotel. We hiked up the winding trail, watching the peak get smaller and smaller as we got closer. That&#8217;s the way it works when there&#8217;s always another peak in the way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/H7a4RP\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7261\/26980295453_01716ab4ab_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC3427\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>looking back into Zermatt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/H7a5H8\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7420\/26980298313_991f97fc37_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC3447\" width=\"640\" height=\"408\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>We had to trick our way past the guard-tiger on the trail to the Matterhorn<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Needless to say, we didn&#8217;t have time to hike all the way to the snowy slopes. We quickly found out the snow was so high it would be dangerous \u00a0(we received numerous warnings about this) to move too far away from the train tracks over the hills into the unknown landscape of lingering winter.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/HYWPpo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7291\/27555046776_2dc71a9474_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC3745\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>So we took photos instead<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It turned out later we had gone the wrong way anyway. The tourist maps showing the summer hiking trails are notoriously confusing about the location of the lake, so much so that the Glacier Express operator told us it was &#8220;wrong&#8221; &#8211; and he was right. The lake we searched for and considered risking our lives for was actually <em>above<\/em> us the entire time, a hike UP from Rotenboden, not down! However, due to recent snowfall, it wouldn&#8217;t have reflected any peaks that day, anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in town, we decided to try the famous Swiss Fondue, ordering the white wine cheese pan.
