autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the sky was still perfectly clear we headed to <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vermilion_Lakes\" target=\"_blank\">Vermillion Lakes<\/a> for shooting stars. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/QQcpk5\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/474\/32050541382_aacb449754_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC1504\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>Oh, you thought I meant a meteor shower, huh?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stepping out into the brittle cold and hearing the ice crack underfoot was unnerving, but to looking up and see the band of the milky way\u2019s core was a rare treat <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/darksitefinder.com\/maps\/world.html\" target=\"_blank\">not available in most places of the world<\/a> anymore (and even on the Darkness Map Vermillion Lakes is still yellow). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, we learned the second lesson of the day about cold temperatures when our camera batteries died within minutes of unsheltered (sitting on a tripod) exposure to the wind gusting across the frozen lake.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There would be no more cloudless nights for the entire trio.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To soothe our frustration (okay, mine) we headed to the Juniper&#8217;s bar once again for shots of Banff Ice.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On our first full day in Banff, also Christmas Day, we had breakfast in the tiny town at the only open cafe before heading up to the Banff Gondola.
