And got stuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/QQet3w\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/640\/32050944102_d6357db607_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC2388\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>Without snowshoes, that trail would be difficult anyway, but we had other more immediate problems.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a replay of our Iceland adventure, we scooped out the snow with our hands and feet and worked ourselves back onto the abandoned snow road.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/R4n3q4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/722\/32199536595_101e357968_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC2403\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>We stopped on the road to take pictures of a decommissioned snowblower resting at the edge of the forest <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"20161230 132554\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oTZTNZ6FgsA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Kicking it at the Kicking Horse River<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undaunted we decided to at least drive on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icefieldsparkway.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Icefields Parkway<\/a> again, but we\u2019d soon be daunted anyway. &nbsp;The storm the night before <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gravsports-ice.com\/icethreads\/ubbthreads.php\/topics\/18839\/Kicking_Horse_Canyon_Avalanche\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">necessitated emergency artillery-generated man-made avalanches<\/a>. The highway was closed and all cars were forced to wait in line while they blew away snow off the mountains.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"20161230 134051\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OKXYprnPwVE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>If nothing else, we needed to get the highway on video.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we got moving again we learned from other drivers that there were at least six avalanche sites to get through on the parkway. We gave up and searched for something more local on the way back to Banff. We were glad we did. Or rather I&#8217;m glad <em>Sam <\/em>did.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"20161230 152441\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Swo64WEpPK0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sam navigated us to <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pc.gc.ca\/eng\/pn-np\/bc\/yoho\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Yoho National Park<\/a>&nbsp;to visit <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.field.ca\/yohonationalpark\/naturalbridge\/\" target=\"_blank\">Natural Bridge<\/a>. Most of the year the site is a picturesque waterfall flowing between two natural rock pillars that lean together (i.e. the \u201cnatural bridge\u201d). However, when we got there, the conditions were so cold we received a special treat. We were able to go down to the creek and walk under the bridge, literally inside the cave where water normally flows.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/Qub7x7\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/300\/31823959860_2f00f09f59_c.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC2525\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>In retrospect, what she&#8217;s doing here is way more dangerous than it looks.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That water had mostly turned to flows of cascading blue ice, but a hole in the floor where the water still hadn&#8217;t frozen provided a window into the rapid gush that went on under our feet and in front of our faces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/QSURNv\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/498\/32081263021_bedd4b3f34_c.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC2512\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>Not really a waterfall, more of a waterfloor.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If anyone fell into that hole they&#8217;d be pulled under miles of ice, dead before anyone could help them. Our steps inside the cave were very slow and deliberate to avoid this catastrophe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/PPKVzp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/397\/31389213453_360c2dea85_z.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC2497\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>Holding on for dear life.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the bare rock walls were slippery smooth, carved into a polished houndstooth pattern by several millennia&nbsp;(or more?) of rushing water in the summers. Patches of tough green moss clung to the outer rims of the hollowed-out rock walls. Other visitors noted that they had never been able to walk under the waterfall before and would only do so after our convincing.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/PM23od\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/412\/31358213544_bc0ca65739_c.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC2627\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our day didn&#8217;t end there, though. When the last visitors before dark declared they were off to Emerald Lake next we decided to follow them. This wasn&#8217;t completely irrational as I\u2019d noticed on a park sign earlier that the lake was nine kilometers away.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, we soon discovered our new friends only intended to go back to the Emerald Lake Lodge (the main hotel, not on the lake). We drove on and discovered the real <a href=\"https:\/\/crmr.com\/emerald\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emerald Lake Lodge<\/a> situated on an island in Emerald Lake surrounded by pine trees and mountains.
