After that, we walked along the canal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/andrewlong\/45094792124\/in\/album-72157697576906150\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4830\/45094792124_b6d6175676_c.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07581\"\/><\/a><figcaption><em>If you want a picture of the canal without people you have to paint it.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> We turned away from the canal to hit up the several blocks of souvenir shops. This included stops for snacking on things like melon ice cream on top of fresh melons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/andrewlong\/44002618580\/in\/album-72157697576906150\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4896\/44002618580_2c8e3042d4_c.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07583\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Neither the melon nor the ice cream was purple, but, that&#8217;s a good thing. (I like melons better than beets!)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Otaru is famous for its canal and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokkaidolikers.com\/en\/articles\/3903\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">glass foundry<\/a>. Most of the souvenirs are hand blown glass. And almost all of them were too expensive (and delicate) for us to buy and bring back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/andrewlong\/44002616710\/in\/album-72157697576906150\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4803\/44002616710_90b3e959e2_c.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07612\"\/><\/a><figcaption>I think more people wanted to buy the foliage on the outside of the glass museum than the trinkets on the inside.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They&#8217;re also famous for a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.japantravel.com\/hokkaido\/otaru-music-box-museum\/37992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">music box museum<\/a>, which we found just before closing and snagged a few items. One of which will go to one of the three people that still <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">reads<\/g> this blog (hi Mom!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before going back to Sapporo we stopped at the canal again for some night shots, which is kind of more what it&#8217;s famous for anyway, though the crowds had clearly diminished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/andrewlong\/45094781154\/in\/album-72157697576906150\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4852\/45094781154_3703e3c008_c.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07647\"\/><\/a><figcaption><em>There&#8217;s a glaring error in all these Japan night photos: I really should have used a lens filter.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Back at the Sapporo train terminal, we had a late dinner with a view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/andrewlong\/30833251947\/in\/album-72157700206931832\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1979\/30833251947_40809395c0_c.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07685\"\/><\/a><figcaption><em>Many-minutes-long exposures would also benefit from lens filters. Like Cher, I too wish I could turn back time.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>When we got back to our room we turned on the AC as the sun had been beating on our floor to ceiling window all day. An hour later our room was much hotter.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/andrewlong\/30833251947\/in\/album-72157700206931832\/\"><br \/><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<p>After failing to find any documentation in English of what we might have done wrong with the thermostat we called the front desk. A man came up with a fan and explained that today the AC units only offered heat. This made little sense since today was hotter outside (sunny and nice) than yesterday (cold and raining), but there you go. He said the entire building had been switched from cooling to heating. So, because the window in our room didn&#8217;t open (and in a country with higher suicide rates than most, I don&#8217;t blame them), we set up the fan and blew air from the hallway into our room for an hour, which earned us some strange looks from other guests.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After breakfast at the train <g class=\"gr_ gr_13 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep gr-progress\" id=\"13\" data-gr-id=\"13\">station,<\/g> we went to Hokkaido University to see the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/map.uu-hokkaido.jp\/e\/hokudai-ginkgo-avenue\/\" target=\"_blank\">avenue of ginkgo trees<\/a> which were changing color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/andrewlong\/45722849242\/in\/album-72157700206931832\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4838\/45722849242_e2f07f02ca_c.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07757\"\/><\/a><figcaption><em>Ohio State ranks #89 on the QS World University Rankings, Hokkaido University? #128. But I don&#8217;t remember any gingko trees on The Oval, do you? So there!<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We also visited a little pond on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/andrewlong\/45048179394\/in\/album-72157700206931832\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4824\/45048179394_b29b13b868_c.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07868\"\/><\/a><figcaption><em>Are the lilly pads there to stop the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.daytondailynews.com\/news\/osu-redsigns-lake-hoping-end-tradition-jumping-before-michigan-game\/d7GRklePWGMpTw8PO5sOaL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>shenanigans <\/em><\/a><em>that go on at ponds on other campuses?<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Across from the pond, I found an iced black coffee that remains the best I&#8217;ve ever tasted, but also the most mysterious. The only Germanic&nbsp;alphabetic characters on the bottle said &#8220;black&#8221; and &#8220;Grandia.&#8221; I found the convenience store brand online and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seicomart.co.jp\/instore\/rb\/rb01_softdrink.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">page that describes its coffee<\/a>. There&#8217;s a photo of a smaller can version of what I bought, but google searches for &#8220;Grandia&#8221; as a brand come up empty, so the manufacturer must be written in kanji and the translations of the store&#8217;s web page offer no help. A little bit of internet sleuthing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BeWm4Ghl1t0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including what appears to be a drawing of a translated version of the can<\/a>, shows that&nbsp; Seicomart, which is a sub-brand of the larger Japanese company Secoma, makes their own coffee (I think). Whatever. I lost you three sentences ago, didn&#8217;t I?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our next stop was at the<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sapporo_Brewery#Japan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Sapporo brewery<\/a> for a tour and a pint of beer made and only sold in Sapporo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/andrewlong\/45722791672\/in\/album-72157700206931832\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1926\/45722791672_4bd29c5b64_c.jpg\" alt=\"DSC07969\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Sorry, but I have to tell the truth. As Japanese beers go, this was not as good as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coedobrewery.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coedo<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After the <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">brewery<\/g> we took a train to&#8230;a mall somewhere to eat dinner. Then walked about a mile to the Japanese version of Willy Wonka&#8217;s Chocolate Factory: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shiroikoibitopark.jp\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shiroi Koibito Park.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/andrewlong\/43955616830\/in\/album-72157700206931832\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4889\/43955616830_ecf656d13a_c.jpg\" alt=\"DSC08164\"\/><\/a><figcaption><em>These fellows are on loan from the zoo, showing us how Unicorn horns are made.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After that, the party split and Sam and I took the subway to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sapporo_TV_Tower\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TV tower<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/andrewlong\/45048124434\/in\/album-72157700206931832\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4878\/45048124434_91c8bf3816_c.jpg\" alt=\"DSC08180\"\/><\/a><figcaption><em>Not the tallest tower in town, but a better view of the park. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We ran into Sam&#8217;s sister and brother-in-law at the Gucci store nearby, which was sort of Sapporo&#8217;s version of Rodeo Drive. Sam claimed that the Don Quijote store there had a good selection of watches. I didn&#8217;t believe her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To my surprise, we found an interesting selection of Seiko and citizen watch models not available in America.<em> So <\/em>interesting that I bought one: <a href=\"https:\/\/w-wired.com\/product\/wired\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Seiko Tokyo Toro Wired model 420<\/a>. I only got that one because the somewhat cooler (more expensive) ones weren&#8217;t available at the shop. The model 420 was only (approximately) $160. And it was a good thing I picked it up, too, because after we came back when I pulled the&nbsp;crown on my citizen to change the time it came all the way out! So my citizen eco drive will be set to Tokyo local time forever.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the last full day in <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">Japan<\/g>&nbsp;The Fam walked to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapporo.travel\/find\/shops\/nijo_fish_market\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nijo fish market <\/a>for sashimi breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/andrewlong\/43955607870\/in\/album-72157700206931832\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1932\/43955607870_e967283b8d_c.jpg\" alt=\"DSC08221\"\/><\/a><figcaption><em>No thanks, just the salmon for me, please.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, it was one last chance to pile on the delicious fresh caught salmon, which, surprisingly, became my favorite thing about the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After breakfast, we took The Fam to Don Quijote for souvenirs. &nbsp;After sitting around the mall for a while we went to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.best-of-sapporo-japan.com\/suage-soup-curry.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Suage+<\/a> for curry.
