{"id":952,"date":"2009-04-05T21:05:32","date_gmt":"2009-04-06T05:05:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=952"},"modified":"2009-04-06T15:08:50","modified_gmt":"2009-04-06T23:08:50","slug":"bad-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.andrewlorenzlong.com\/?p=952","title":{"rendered":"bad art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Friday night Sam and I went to the benign Culver City Art Walk.\u00a0 This Art Walk consisted of five or six galleries in a row on one street.\u00a0 Ordinarily this would be great except for two things. 1) no parking 2) most of the art was complete crap.<\/p>\n<p>At one of the galleries we found the ultimate example of bad art (passing for good).\u00a0 As we walked in another patron was leaving and exclaimed &#8220;this kinda shit pisses me off!&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What kinda shit was she talking about?\u00a0 well&#8230; see for yourself:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"shitty art by Joe Bradley\" src=\"http:\/\/www.peresprojects.com\/g_full\/5329.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"383\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"more shitty Joe Bradley art\" src=\"http:\/\/www.peresprojects.com\/g_full\/5330.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"383\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We found a CV for the artist &#8211; Joe Bradley &#8211; in the back of the gallery.\u00a0 The show was\/is called &#8220;Like a Turkey Thru Corn.&#8221;\u00a0 If the above photos aren&#8217;t enough, you really have to see the &#8220;walkthrough&#8221; video <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peresprojects.com\/exhibit-video\/214\/45\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This exemplifies all that can be bad about modern art.\u00a0 These &#8220;paintings&#8221; consist of raw canvas and grease pencil.\u00a0 Some write-ups about other shows are unintentionally obvious about his horrible work.\u00a0 The first quote is actually for the show you see above:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artslant.com\/la\/events\/show\/47882-like-a-turkey-through-corn\" target=\"_blank\">The paintings presented here, however, continue the artist&#8217;s beloved and maligned new Schmagoo series, first presented in New York last fall. A somewhat ridiculous word, &#8220;Schmagoo&#8221; originates from the Beat-era street slang for heroin. It is this wry semiotic pairing that compels the artist to take a primitive approach<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk\/artists\/joe_bradley.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Executed on cheap pre-fab canvases, and painted with intentional mediocrity, Bradley\u2019s paintings are immediately sympathetic in their impoverished aesthetic. Towering with a commanding primitivism <\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joe_Bradley_(artist)\" target=\"_blank\">Bradley has said his work is \u201cintentionally shoddy\u201d and \u201cpathetic\u201d<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is why I didn&#8217;t enjoy art school, because I had to attend with no-talent hacks like this, who were praised for their brilliance by the class (and professors) while my work was dismissed because &#8220;her arm is too long&#8221; or &#8220;his skin tone is too red.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I should note that Joe Bradley doesn&#8217;t have an MFA, and there is only one reason he can get away with all of this &#8211; his Bachelors is from the Rhode Island School.\u00a0 To anyone unfamiliar with the art world &#8211; having a degree from the Rhode Island school is like having an MBA from Harvard, nobody questions you.\u00a0 Even when you start a war on the premise of\u00a0&#8220;preemptive strike.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Friday night Sam and I went to the benign Culver City Art Walk.\u00a0 This Art Walk consisted of five or six galleries in a row on one street.\u00a0 Ordinarily this would be great except for two things. 1) no parking 2) most of the art was complete crap.
