Like Father Like Son

  1. In Flanders Fields
    by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
    We shall not sleep,
    though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

  2. I think perhaps the point was that this post was her idea. She noticed the similarities from memory – I don’t know if I would have caught it. I’m inclined to believe the comment was a joke and not mean spirited as it was taken.

Technically on blogs it is common to give credit for a story (i.e. on “thanks to JB for the tip”) – and I did not do so here.

  3. I’m assuming you are not referring to Matthew and Gunnar… in which case as it is outside the realm of 90s pop I’m not sure what you are referring to.

Oh wait – Nelson Muntz – no no. I think her “haha” was not one of derision but more along the lines of “cute.” Usually when someone writes “ha” or “lol” or any of that in online communication it is simply a mood indicator and not a literal laughing AT the subject (in a disparaging way). It took me a while to get used to it, but I find myself saying “ha” in IMs a lot – although I still haven’t been able to transition to the “lol” as it seems a bit much…

  4. Woah woah woah… Overwhelmed! You guys are just joking back and forth right? Because it true that I actually find the keen resemblance that the photo captured unintentionally kind of neat. (^-^) Was just trying to claim my idea in a light hearted manner.
