BCAM

Sunday afternoon I went to LACMA with Aaron, Ethan and Alicia. I finally found out what those “BCAM BORN” signs are all about that have been on LA light posts for months. BCAM stands for the Boone Contemporary Art Museum. I don’t think the building was even there when I was at LACMA last fall. The goal of Mr. Boone (the founder of SunAmerica) was to make Los Angeles the world’s center for contemporary art. To do so he bought up many of the iconic pieces that art historians love to champion as breakthroughs in contemporary art. These include famous pieces from the likes of Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein, Damien Hirst, Ed Ruscha and Richard Serra.

Although it was cool to see these pieces from my college art texts in person – I still did not find much “art” in a lot of them. I actually found the Chicano art movement exhibit in the American Artists part of the museum much more interesting and engaging.
