I mentioned the fact to Byron the other day that the ending to the watchmen didn’t make much sense. This review I found today says it perfectly though…

The Coming Storm
It’s a rare rainy day in Los Angeles, so there’ll be no walks on the beach or shopping excursions to the fancy outdoor mall or (for us) eating an outdoor table at a local restaurant. So I’m thinking about what everyone (at least anyone heavily invested in the stock market) is apparently thinking about: AI. […]
Van City (Not a post about Burning Man)
NOTE: as I was preparing to post this I received an email (which I honestly thought was a phishing scam at first) from YouTube that my channel has been removed because of “severe or repeated violations of our spam, deceptive practices and scams policy.” This took me a while to figure out, but what I gather […]
Or Are We Gone?
After coming back from New Zealand on February 3rd and seeing the chaos the new administration was intent on sowing immediately (an upgraded Bannon “Flood the Zone” tactic, now that all the slightly-less-than-ultra right wing folks like Tillerson that might urge any caution against running afoul of the constitution have been expelled from the cult) […]
One thing not mentioned in the article is the aftermath for the Watchmen now that there is peace. When you see them at the end of the movie they almost look confused. Prior to that moment, they had a purpose–fighting against evil. With world peace and everyone being united, what do they do now? Attend Comicon conventions as themselves?
In a post 9-11 nation however, we know the unity doesn’t last. But with the destruction that occured at the end of the movie, it’s almost enough to force people to unite under fear of being destroyed like living under the iron curtain or during the cold war.
The ending was very messianic. Ozymandias, who basically views himself like a God, essentially causes armageddon in a biblical sense–which is what Revelations predicts will have to happen in order to have the world peace or zion, people of one heart, one mind and one in purpose. Ozymandias thinks he has what he wants–world peace, but what he really has is world domination, the opposite of a messiah. Ozymandias is not the type of character who would be content with just accomplishing the peace he desired. With his purpose gone he would soon grow bored and probably do what most people with absolute power would do in the situation–abuse the power.
I see room for a sequel.
not if it doesn’t bring in more cash…
Too true. I think the producers thought Watchmen would be equally as big as Dark Knight and they would be able to expand the franchise for future movies. Unfortunately, The Watchmen wasn’t as far reaching and high concept as they perceived it to be (in addition to appealling to the graphic novel fans). Really, I think the ending was just a set up for a sequel.
Watchmen made $211 million in the US. That’s pretty good for a movie. With the production costs estimated at $120 mil, that’s not a bad profit either. However, there have been some really big stinkers that got sequels after bombing at the box office. The Hulk comes to mind. *rolls eyes* I’m sure another Watchmen is already in the works.
