My dad pointed out that the area I was in yesterday was the Santa Susana Field Laboratory. Specifically I was wandering around Area 1 and the “southern buffer area.” Apparently the land is still quite polluted and the fires last year released more toxic stuff.
This morning I woke up with a stuffy head/runny nose.
Do you think I have swine flu or radiation poisoning?
Pollen would be more of a danger. You probably got more exposure just being in the sunlight. People get a little paranoid (probably with some justification) over radioactivity but driving on the freeway to downtown puts you at greater risk–having said that, it never hurts to be aware of the possibilities.
Well yes, it was intended as a joke. Although the crazy thing is that the allergies didn’t affect me at all until around midnight. When I was literally running through the crap I didn’t sneeze or sniffle at all. Adrenaline is similar to an antihistamine, so that makes sense. My face is a little burnt too, which would lead to similar symptoms. I do worry about what might have entered my bloodstream after being scraped by all that stuff now, though. Supposedly the fire last year released more toxins… which could in theory be stuck to the trees that I touched.
Again, if it was ultra super toxic you’d think they would fence it off or something. Granted it was hard to get up there… but there was no clear definition of where the park ended and the testing site began (and no markers for leaving LA county either).
I’d be a little more concerned about what you find out there. That site was used frequently for testing rocket engines. Dave’s step-father used to work there helping mix chemicals for the engines. If it’s not radioactive, it’s some other harmful substance.
