the slow sting of the sliding economy

Although I’ve been “largely” unaffected by the economy there are a few things that have happened recently.

A few weeks ago the company I work for stopped their matching (although it was already a small percentage) contributions to our 401Ks.

Yesterday I got a message from the host of my business site (a different host than the one this blog is on) that they are putting an end to their “low cost” services and I could either leave or upgrade to their much more expensive service.  The business site is very small and so I wasn’t about to “upgrade.”  However, the demise of this server is going to cause a few temporary headaches.

Months ago I got a notice from the host of this blog (and the rest of this site) that I was out of space.  I immediately starting uploading my blog photos to the business site host and linking from there.  It turns out that I had tens of thousands of spam emails with attachments on this host.  I had to petition the hosting company to delete them for me – as I could only select ten at a time in the email software (so you can imagine how long it would take to delete 90,000 emails ten at a time).  Once that was done I had something like 200 MB of free space here.  However, after putting up a few months of blog entry photos on the business server I realized I should just use my google Picasa account to host the photos and I’ve been doing that for about three months.

Now, since the business site has to move, that means all those photos on the blog that are hosted on the business server are going to be dead links.  So last night I spent two hours transferring all the images to picasa, then looking up each individual photo in each blog entry and changing the link for each image.  This took about two hours to change all of them.  Ironically these entries were from a period where I was posting a LOT of photos (Christmas through Byron’s visit).

Now that is done – but I still have to transfer all my business website files to this server (I bought an add-on domain) and then reconfigure things/scripts like the fill-out email form on the contact page.

or I could study for my accounting test on Monday.

wonder what I’ll do….
