Last night Aaron and I met up to visit our old neighborhood of North Hollywood. Garen was playing guitar for Ken Christianson in the monthly NoHo music festival. Too bad this wasn’t going on when I was living two blocks away four years ago. Ken wouldn’t be on for another 40 minutes when we arrived so we walked over to the Cella Gallery on Lankershim to see Kristy Hanson. She had a very strong voice, which I thought wasn’t used to capacity in the “acoustic sing along” type of show she was doing.
Ken (and his band) played very tightly despite (so Garen says) being pulled together to play live for the first time not too long ago. Ken’s songs are each stylistically very different from the other, which may be my only criticism. A rock-out cover of Kashmir was followed up with a John Mayer-esque quiet pop ballad. An earlier song (which was probably my favorite) featured a guitar solo that could have been lifted out of an authentic 70s “electric country” band.
