art walk

On Wednesday night Justin, Aaron and I took the red line subway from North Hollywood to meet Aaron and Martin downtown for the monthly art walk. When we arrived Aaron and Martin said they were too tired from all the walking they’d done at Siggraph and headed back home. It was too bad because they actually missed a lot of people and art. Of course, 99% of the art was not so good… but that is to be expected in an era where schtick is more important than skill.

We never found out if this was the free shuttle for the art walk or…something else….

UPDATE – 8-20-08 – On Saturday I noticed that there was a number on the side of the bus. Since I take all my shots in superfine 10 megapixel glory I was able to see the number and call it. The bus has nothing to do with the art walk and is a private bus rental service. That particular bus rents out for 5 hours at $450 and $99 each hour after that. It can hold 30+, has a full bar, “dance floor”, and stripper pole.

Some galleries were in moving trucks.

But most were in real gallery spaces.

A live reggae band at the corner of Main and 5th. When I first walked by they were playing a reggae version of Afroman’s classic “Because I got high.”

Often I would get frustrated with the art and jump ahead of the herd.

I would just as often get left behind trying to take a “cool” shot.

Along main the crowd was really getting heavy – but it was unclear if they were there for the art – or just warming up for the downtown clubs further down the street.

These street portrait artists were actually some of the better artists on the walk.
