We just had a fairly major (i.e. I felt it this time) earthquake! This is the first one in over a year – but this was way more exciting. Early reports are saying this was a 5.8. I hope nothing fell over at my house! the earth is still shaking slowly and gently now as I write this…sort of a weird feeling.

On Saturday we woke up dark and early before the sun in order to catch our Uber to LAX before 7am. We were flying southwest and had checked in the day before right at the buzzer, the instant we were allowed to, but still ended up in C group. When we finally lined up we […]
The City of (not sun) Light
Our train arrived in Paris after sunset and we tried to use the “easy” subway system we experienced in London and Brussels but were quickly stymied by a glitchy machine that wouldn’t keep English selected past the initial screen. Kind of a problem for figuring out what to buy. Belgium even had a guy walking […]
They Should all be Belgian Fries Instead
We reached Brussels before sunset, perfect for checking out the Bourse Christmas Market. We’d picked the right lodging in some ways and the worst in others. The hotel was right next to the market and the hub of the city, but it was also somehow very loud at night with clanging and banging and strange […]
Thats just those fat people in south l.a. stamping their feet and demanding their fast food.
There are plenty of fat people in northern LA county too, to be fair…

oh yeah, now I remember. We aren’t smart enough to take care of ourselves out here…
I was at work… watched my plants shake and my assistant hide under his desk. Everybody else here was here for the 94 Northridge so they were screaming “woohoo, here we go!”
The reaction is kind of funny. 40 seconds of shaking and everybody goes nuts. When I lived in Ohio we’d have thunderstorms and hailstorms and snowstorms that would last for hours and hours. I remember being in college and my apartment door (which faced out towards the sky) being pummeled by hail and it sounding like zombies trying to get in. Even then we weren’t scared because these things happened fairly regularly.
I found the experience yesterday “interesting” but not frightening or unnerving.
I think we were all just glad to have something else to talk about instead of Britney Spears for a change.
It’s been downgraded to a 5.4 since yesterday. I was sitting at a restaurant in Canyon Country during the earthquake. At first I thought it was the kid in the booth behind me being squirrelly and making the booth shake. Then the lights began to sway a little and I knew that wasn’t him. Two women in another booth became extremely terrified after it was over and immediately ran to the waitress for their check and some take-out boxes. I’m guessing they are from out-of-state. Not sure what they thought they were going to accomplish by leaving the diner so quickly. I’d hate to see how they would react if we had a REAL shaker.
I called my son at home to check on him once the cell lines cleared up from all the traffic. I asked him about it and he said, “What earthquake?” LMAO
